5 Killer Tips For Naming Your Startup Company

Deciding on the right name for your startup company is very important. It can have a negative impact on the success of your company. By not putting in enough thought into can cause legal issues and difficulty connecting with customers. On the bright side, a bold, clear and meaningful name can be extremely helpful, especially when it comes to marketing and branding.

In this post, I will be sharing 5 killer tips for naming your startup company, so without any more babble, here we go!

Tip 1: Do not use a name that would be hard to spell
You do not want your potential customers to have a hard time finding your company online. Choose a name that is short, sweet and easy to remember, also check for correct spelling in an English dictionary. A good idea of a great name that is easy to spell and remember is Gumtree.  If the name is hard to spell, people may end up pronouncing it wrong.
Have a look at this infographic by HubSpot about some brand names that most of us pronounce wrong!

Tip 2: Choose a name that can grow with your business
If you choose a name that limits your company to a specific product or service, your business name alone will stunt the growth of your business. Imagine eBay called their company “Ebooks Bay” and only sold ebooks. Avoid using product or service specific names. To add more value to this tip, when deciding on a name, try and incorporate “Group” into the name. An example would be the “Wembley Group”, this company has different specialities from a restaurant, to a grocery, bakery and even a travel and tour company.

Tip 3: Check online if the name is not already taken
Before you register your company, you want to check online if the company name is available. To do this, simply head over to Google and in the search box, search for the name. If it is taken, I recommend you try a different variation of the name. Try looking for synonyms that can work in place of another. This is important because if you register a name which is very much similar to an existing brand, it can cause confusion to both your target audience and vice versa. An example of a problem caused by this is if you decide on a domain name like nigertourz.com and a company name exists by the domain name of nigertours.com, users could end up confused an possibly visit the wrong website.

Tip 4 – Make sure that a .com domain is available
I recommend that before registering your company, do your due diligence and check if your company name in a .com domain extension is available. Often times a domain name with a .com extension may not be. If it is not available, you can find out who the owner is and ask if the owner is willing to sell the domain name to you. You can find out whom the domain owner is by using the domain name lookup service by Whois. Also check if your company name is available on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus etc.

Tip 5 – Find out what people think
Get feedback on the name, I suggest that you come up with at least 10 names and hear what friends, family, and trusted colleagues have to say. This is one of the most important tips, as it will give you a better understanding as to how people interact with the name, and how they perceive it.
